ABCDEF’s of CVD Prevention
This infographic provides an easy-to-remember mnemonic for cardiovascular disease prevention, covering the major elements:
- A (Assess the Risk & AC): Use tools like the pooled cohort equation to assess the 10-year risk and consider additional factors like CAC score, aspirin, and anticoagulation when appropriate.
- B (BMI & BP): Target BP <130/80 mm Hg and BMI <25 kg/m², with recommendations for weight loss or maintenance as needed.
- C (Cigarettes & Cholesterol): Strongly encourage smoking cessation and, if appropriate, initiate statin therapy for patients based on age, diabetes, and risk factors.
- D (Dream, Diet, DM): Emphasize good sleep, a Mediterranean diet, and diabetes management, including options like metformin, GLP-1 RA, and SGLT2 inhibitors.
- E (Exercise): Recommend at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity or 75 minutes of vigorous exercise per week, and use digital tools to monitor progress.
- F (Failure – Reduced EF): Medication recommendations include ARNI or ACEi/ARB, aldosterone antagonists, beta blockers, and SGLT2 inhibitors.
